THE GOD OF SURPRISES (A SHORT STORY)

WRITTEN BY: EUNICE ISEOLUWA OYEKUNLE

I laid down on my bed fully sad and worried.

Two months ago, Dad lost his Job as a cosmetic surgeon. Mum has little or no sales. My younger brother and I hardly eat three square meals a day. My brother and I were sent out of school because we were yet to pay our third term school fees. Everything has just turned upside down for my family and I. things are really falling apart.

Two days before, I was humiliated at the front of the assembly because I wore a uniform that was slightly torn at my side. My parents were to broke that they couldn’t afford to help me sew my torn uniform at the tailor’s shop. My mum had to dig out my old uniform which was so tight that I forcefully wore it. Things was as bad as that.

Two days ago, my mum went to buy some foodstuffs on credit for us to eat in the family. My mum would always say that, ‘’ Tough time never lasts but tough people do’’

Hot tears rolled down my cheeks as I though of all that was going on the family. I was literally tired of life. I questioned God and asked Him why He made Dad to lose His job and also why mum is not making sales in her business. ‘’Two days to this time, exam would start, how then would I cope’’.

‘’God, why are you so unfair?’’ I said wailing.

‘’Rhoda, don’t ever say that. No matter what happens to man, God is fair, he has been good to us.’’ Mrs Adeigbe who had been listening to her daughter said as she entered into her daughter’s room.

‘’Mum, since when have you been here’’? Rhoda asked surprisingly.

‘’My daughter, I was about to call you for lunch when I suddenly heard that you were mumbling to yourself. I decided to stand for a while to listen carefully to all that you are saying’’ Mrs Adeigbe said wiping her daughter’s tears.

‘’Now let me ask you a question. Why do you think that God has been unfair to us in this family. ‘’ Mrs Adeigbe asked her daughter

‘’Mum, we find it hard to eat a meal in a day, out of over two hundred and fifty students in my school, my sister and I are the only ones that were sent out of school fees.’’ Rhoda said childishly.

‘’Hmm, my daughter. Is that all?’’ Mrs Adeigbe lovingly asked her daughter

‘’Yes mum’’ Rhoda replied.

‘’Now I want you to pay attention to what I want to say now’’

‘’Okay mum, I am all ears’’ she answered.

‘’I want you to scrape that foolish mentality that God is unfair. No matter what is going on in this family, God remains God. Our bad situation in this family doesn’t mean that God is not good to us. There is always a reason to be grateful. You are better off many people out there’’ Mrs Adeigbe said looking at her daughter who seemed like she had something to say.

‘’Really mum? I have a reason to be grateful?’’ Rhoda asked in bewilderment.

‘’Exactly my daughter. Many of your mates are orphans, many are in the hospital, many are deaf and blind. Some are into prostitution. Some has to hawk under the scorching sun. god has done a lot of things for you and your family if you can look within us. Yes, if you can focus on what you have and not what you don’t have, you will see that God really loves you.’’

‘’Wow! Mum, this is so deep. I have never thought of this before.’’

‘’You never did because Devil doesn’t want you to be grateful. All he wants you too be seeing is that thing that God hasn’t done for you yet’’ Mrs Adeigbe nail the words on its head.

‘’Devil has failed in my life. God I am so sorry for not be grateful’’ Rhoda said as she fell on her kneels.

‘’One more thing my daughter. God loves you and he wants you to ask for whatever you wants. He listens to all your heart cries. He knows what you need but He just wants you to ask Him. He loves to listen to children mostly.’’ Mrs Adeigbe

‘’So if I tell God that He should restore my Dad’s job and turn all our situations around, he would answer me’’?

‘’Yes dear, he would. His word says, ‘’ Cast all your burdens upon me for I care for you.’’

His word also says, ‘’ Be careful for nothing but in prayers and supplications, let all your requests be known unto me’’

‘’Wow, let me start speaking to my God’’ Rhoda said excitedly.

‘’Then, I will have to excuse my daughter’’ Mrs Adeigbe said happily thanking God in her mind that He has taken charge of her daughter’s life.

Three hours later, Mr Adeigbe happily told her wife that he just got the e-mail that he should resume back to school the next day. Mrs Adeigbe and Cynthia were so happy about the miracle.

Their melodious songs of joy made Rhoda to jump out of her room.

‘’My God is a miracle God

My God is a miracle God

He has never fail

He would never fail

He would do what He promised to do’’

The trio sang joyously, leaving Rhoda in suspense.

‘’Please, what’s happening’’? Rhoda was enjoying the whole atmosphere of joy.

‘’See my daughter. I told you that God listens. Dad just received an e- mail that he should resume school tomorrow.’’

‘’What???? This is a miracle. God listens. He is a prayer answering God. He listened to my brief prayers. I salute you Lord. You are a God of surprises!”Rhoda said rolling on the floor, thanking God.

‘’He really is! The God that comes through at the most unexpected time. Father, we worship You!  Let us pray’’ Mr Adeigbe said.

………….

The Bible says, ‘’ ask and it shall be given unto you, seek and ye shall find, knock ant it shall be opened unto you’’. Just like God did it for the Adeigbe’s in the short story, Go can do it for you as well. Ask Him all that He desires and have faith that He would do it.
