LIVE IN THE MOMENT

Jayne wasn’t herself anymore. She sat in her room all day, depressed and gloomy. Two days at a go, her mouth had not tasted any food or water. She had grown so lean in two days. Mrs smart, her mother noticed how her countenance had changed, she decided to have an heart to heart talk with her only daughter.

 

 

Mrs smart knocked her daughter’s door before she eventually opened the door. Mrs smart looked at her daughter unbelievably. The first thing she noticed about her was her lean body. Her round body had given way to a lean, bony body. Her eyes were puffy and teary. Her hair was so ruffled and unkempt. Wet tissue papers on the floor could fill a big bowl.

 

‘’Jayne, what’s wrong? Why are you sad? I just noticed that you haven’t been your normal lively self. You lock yourself up in the room all day. Worst of all, you have refuse to eat your food for the past few days. I have had to be pouring your food into the dust bin. I thought that you’ve been taking some cornflakes, cocopops and noodles but when I checked the store, I discovered that the cartons of provisions there are untouched. My daughter, what is wrong? You can always talk to mum, right?’’ Mrs Smart said, wrapping her hands around her daughter whose eyes were soaked with tears.

 

 

The silence was so huge that it was becoming unbearable for Mrs. Smart.

 

 

‘’My sugar plum, I know I haven’t had much time for you. I intentionally dumped you into the boarding school so that I will have much time for my work. This lockdown is the reason why you are at home. I care so much about my vlogging and blogging that I have almost disowned my only daughter. I have been such a bad mother. I am so sorry my baby. Please forgive mum and be happy. I will start to create time for you. I can even withdraw you from the boarding school. Mrs smart said regrettably.

 

 

‘’No mum, you shouldn’t do that. I enjoy being a boarder. I love the fact that my mum is a popular vlogger and that your YouTube channel is a source of blessing to many people all over the world. What is wrong with me is not about you ma’’ Jayne said, struggling to fight the tears that almost ran down again.

 

 

‘’So what is it, my daughter? Many youths are happy as a result of my counsels and advice. My own daughter can’t be down and I wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. Other people’s children open up to me, why not you my princess?’’

 

 

‘’Mum, I am just tired of my life. I am in my final year in secondary school, counting days to finish my last year as a final student. I have been visualizing myself as an undergraduate student. See what this lockdown has caused mum. Mum, I am tired of this life.’’ Jayne poured out her mind.

 

 

‘’Hmm, is that alL? Is that the reason why you have been depressed that you even reject your food?’’ Mrs smart asked firmly but calmly.

 

 

‘’That’s not all mum. Mum, how will my life be when I eventually get married? How will I leave you mum and start living with another man that I don’t know from the onset? Mum, what is life? Going to school, going for service, getting married, giving birth to children and dying. So mum what is life?”

 

 

‘’Hmmm, my daughter, have you spoken all that you have to say?’’ Mrs smart asked looking into her daughter’s face lovingly.

 

 

‘’Yes mum’’ Jayne replied.

 

 

‘’See my daughter, you have indeed spoken well. In this life, anything that is meant to be will be. There is a song that says;

 

 

Many things about tomorrow

I don’t seem to understand

But I know who holds tomorrow

And I know that He cares for me.

 

 

‘’ my daughter, nobody is certain about what will happen in future. That is why in this life, one needs to walk with the one that knows the future right from the past.’’ Mrs smart said, enjoying the fact that her daughter was absorbing all that she was saying.

 

 

‘’See my darling, you are anxious and you can’t wait to enter the university right? Most people in the university can’t wait to finish the university as well. That is the reason why you should enjoy every moment while it lasts. Make the best use of every opportunities that you have as a secondary school student because you can never have an opportunity to be a secondary school student’’. Mrs Smart said

 

 

‘’Hmmm, mum. These are deep sayings.’’ Jayne said nodding her head intermittently.

 

 

‘’My daughter, you were talking about marriage. See my dear, the future will take care of itself. When you are ripe for marriage, the Lord will give you the right husband. The one that will love you and respect you. Just maximize today’s opportunity because you might not regain it tomorrow’’

 

 

‘’Hmmm, I know better now’’ Her face shone more brightly.

 

 

‘’My daughter, another thing that I want you to understand is that, you need God. If you ask me that why am I in this world. I will tell you two reasons. First one is to please God and to fulfill my purpose of creation. Whenever God calls me home, I will be so glad because I know that I lived a life of purpose and also I live my life one day at a time. Live every of your moment like there will not be tomorrow.

 

 

‘’Wow’’ Jayne exclaimed, listening with rapt attention.

 

 

‘’Be happy, be strong, love God and do what you love doing. By doing that, life will become more meaningful to you. You will not even be mindful of the cares of the world any longer’’. Mrs smart said.

 

 

‘’Thank you mummy. In fact, I cannot just thank you enough. ‘’ Jayne said and hugged her mum

 

 

‘’You are welcome, my daughter. Now open your Bible, I want you to read some verses out.’’ Mrs smart said

 

 

‘’Alright ma’’ Jayne said and stood up to bring her bible on the table that was adjacent her. 

 

 

‘’Now open to the book of Ecclesiastes chapter 11 verse 7-9.’’

 

 

‘’Alright mum”  She said as she opened her bible.

 

‘’ I am reading from message version, mum.’’

 

 

 oh, how sweet the light of day,

And how wonderful to live in the sunshine!

Even if you live a long time, don’t take a single day for granted.

Take delight in each light -filled hour,

Remembering that there will also be many dark days

And most of what comes your way is smoke

 

You who are young, make most of your youth

Relish your youthful vigor

Follow the impulses of your heart

If something looks good to you, pursue it

But know also that not just anything goes;

You have to answer to God for every last bit of it.

 

 

‘’Wow! These verses were really written for me. Thanks for this mummy. You are just the best’’

 

 

‘’Thank God, my daughter and to cap it all, always celebrate yourself. Devil doesn’t like happy people. He hates it when you listen to spiritual and spiritual song and dance with gratitude to God. So whenever the Devil comes with sadness, defeat him by singing and dancing. Okay?’’

 

 

‘’Yes mummy’’

 

 

‘’Now, come and eat your best meal of fried rice and ogunfe meat and then wash it down with some chilled mango juice. Its already on the dining table’’

 

 

‘’Mummy, thank you. You are indeed a gift to me. I appreciate and adore you ma. Sadness and worry will not have any power over me anymore. I am victorious’’ She said, rising up to eat

 

 

‘’That’s the spirit, darling.’’ Mrs Smart said, thankfully.
